A Fresh Start & Cosmic Country Ball

Hi and welcome to all things Lost Cowgirl! After three years of being in the music and "record label" business I'm starting with a fresh look and new goals for 2020!

I have spent countless hours sending emails and physical CD's out to album reviewers trying to get my album and the artists I work with reviews. My new Lost Cowgirl blog will feature concert reviews and album reviews of music that I enjoy. While there will still be an emphasis on cowgirls, I plan to include some cowboys as well! I hope this serves to help my local music community and beyond.

In 2019, I hosted monthly Lost Cowgirl Records songwriter rounds. In 2020, I am going to continue monthly events but will also host larger events at different venues. I'll be writing the details of the performs and the events in this blog. In January we attended Folk Alliance International conference in New Orleans and hosted a privates showcase room. It was a great success and you'll have to check back to see photos and reviews of some of our favorite artists we saw at Folk Alliance in a later Lost Cowgirl blog.

In February we are hosting a one night festival at the Voodoo Lounge in Kansas City called the "Cosmic Country Ball"! We are so grateful to Voodoo Lounge for the opportunity to curate this show and I hope you will join us for an evening of Kansas City based, lady fronted Americana bands! Please RSVP through our Facebook event. Tickets are still available through Ticketmaster and will also be available at the door.

What is cosmic country music you might ask? Cosmic Americana music was born in the late 1960's in California with The Byrds, Doug Sahm and Gram Parsons. Cosmic country is what Martin and I have used to describe our music. We say its trippy country music. One of my original songs was even featured on an official Spotify Cosmic Country playlist with Tyler Childers, Margo Price, Sturgill Simpson, Townes Van Zandt, Gram Parsons, Kacey Musgraves and many more. I like to think Cosmic Country is experimental modern day country music that echoes the past and is NOT pop country. Here is our lineup for the night!

8:00PM Miki P & the Swallowtails - Fronted by the multi-instrumentalist and fearless Miki P, this band is breaking all the rules with a cello and a bassoon in the band. The sound this band creates is beautifully unique and it will take your mind on a trip. Their music might not be "country" but it definitely is cosmic and Miki P carries the lost cowgirl spirit.

8:30PM Lost Cowgirl Revue - This band features four independent, well-known, talented songwriters: Kristin Hamilton, Joy Zimmerman, Julie Bennett Hume, and Chris Hudson. They join forces each sharing their original music with layers of harmony. Over ten albums of original music has been released between the four members of this band and each member brings their own flare and variety to their sound.

9:00PM Lily B Moonflower - Lily writes unique sounding country/bluegrass music and typically brings a slew of great bluegrass pickers on stage with her. She ropes in audiences with her congenial personality and fun songs. She is currently recording her debut album with Martin Farrell Jr. in the Lost Cowgirl studio and we cannot wait for the world to hear this release!

9:30PM Elexa Dawson - Front woman of the well-known Kansas band "Weda Skirts", Elexa released her first solo record "Music is Medicine" with Lost Cowgirl Records in December, 2019. Her lyrics encompass true stories and healing powers inspired by her native heritage. Her powerful vocal quality fits somewhere between rock, soul, and country and the hooks she writes will be stuck in your head for weeks to come after hearing them just one time.

10:00PM Lorna Kay's One Night Stand - One of Lauren Krum's many musical projects, this band is our most traditional country band of the night. You'll hear beautiful harmonies between Lauren Krum and Fritz Hutchison accompanied by a full country band with lots of pedal steel and twang. The first time I heard the effortless vocals of Lauren Krum singing Patsy Cline, I was hooked and have followed her projects ever since. She can sing about any style of music but I definitely enjoy her country music the most.

10:30PM Unfit Wives - High-spirited, original bluegrass music with four-part lady harmonies and hot-pickin'. Currently recording their debut album in the Lost Cowgirl studio, this band has been packing bars and making waves in the Lawrence, KS and surrounding areas for the past year. Their upbeat shows are entertaining from start to finish and will leave you coming back for more.

Today Unfit Wives gathered for a photo shoot to give you an example of some Cosmic Country inspired outfits! Don't feel like you need to go out and buy something new (unless you want to!). Just dress fun with a country flare. If you are looking for a good spot to buy new or vintage clothing you might want to stop by my favorite Kansas City stop, Donna's Dress Shop. Three out of four of these dresses in this picture are Donna's Dress shop

11:00PM Jenna Rae - This is ME! I'll be playing tunes off of the latest "Jenna & Martin" album titled "Cosmic Western Duets". We'll have my brother, Jason McCarty on the funky bass and Duncan Burnett on the drums. Martin Farrell Jr. will be on the pedal steel, telecaster, and cosmic harmonies.
